Split your trip expenses
Enable JavaScript to enter your expenses, select participants and calculate balances. The worked example and calculation method below are available without JavaScript. Entries stay in your open tab and are not sent to TRIPPSITTER.
A shared room, a transfer and an optional activity rarely involve exactly the same people. This calculator lets each expense have its own participants, so someone who skips an activity does not inherit its cost. Enter expenses already paid, check the receipt amounts together, then use the suggested settlement to close the ledger.
How to use the calculator
Start with two to eight travellers and distinct nicknames. Choose one currency for the entire ledger. Add an expense with its receipt total, the person who paid it, and the people who agreed to share it. The selected participants split that expense equally; the payer can be outside that group if they paid on someone else’s behalf. Record an individual purchase by selecting only its owner.
Enter the final amount including any taxes or agreed charges. Do not enter the same receipt twice, and do not mix a deposit with the full booking price if the deposit is already included in that price. Unpaid future bookings belong in your planning budget, not this paid-expense ledger. Download the text summary before closing the tab. The calculator does not save entries between visits.
Worked example: three travellers, one optional activity
These are invented teaching amounts in INR, not destination prices, a travel report or provider quotes. Traveller A pays 4,800 for a room used by A, B and C. Traveller B pays 1,800 for their shared transfer. Traveller A also pays 1,200 for an activity joined only by A and B. Use “Load illustrative example” to try these exact entries.
The room and transfer cost 6,600, so each traveller’s share is 2,200. The activity adds 600 each to A and B. A has paid 6,000 against an own share of 2,800 and receives 3,200. B has paid 1,800 against a share of 2,800 and pays A 1,000. C has paid nothing against a share of 2,200 and pays A 2,200. Total paid and total allocated both equal 7,800.
| Traveller | Paid | Own share | Balance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Traveller A | 6,000 | 2,800 | +3,200 |
| Traveller B | 1,800 | 2,800 | −1,000 |
| Traveller C | 0 | 2,200 | −2,200 |
Calculation method and rounding
For each expense, divide the amount equally among the selected participants. The calculator works in whole minor units, such as paise or cents. If an amount cannot be divided exactly, the first selected travellers in the displayed traveller order receive one extra minor unit until the remainder is exhausted. For example, 100.00 split three ways becomes 33.34, 33.33 and 33.33. Reordering checkbox selections does not change this rule.
A traveller’s balance is what they paid minus their allocated shares. A positive balance means they receive money; a negative balance means they owe money. Suggested transfers match debtors and creditors in displayed traveller order until every balance is zero. This provides a valid settlement, and does not promise the smallest possible number of payments. Input validation hides all balances while an expense is incomplete, so a partially entered ledger cannot look settled.
Scope, privacy and corrections
The tool supports equal splits, up to 30 paid expenses and four currencies with two decimal places: INR, USD, EUR and GBP. Changing currency changes the label; it does not convert amounts or look up exchange rates. Use your own agreed conversion for mixed-currency receipts before entering them. Negative amounts, refunds, unequal weights and automatic bank imports are not supported. Handle refunds by agreeing the remaining net expense before entering it.
Entries remain in memory in this tab. They are not sent to TRIPPSITTER, saved to your account or included in the page address. Closing or reloading clears them. A downloaded summary is a file under your control and can expose nicknames and spending if you share it. Check participants and receipts with your companions before making any payment; the tool neither moves money nor determines cancellation liability.
